Here’s an interesting take on increasing newspaper circulation. It highlights what can happen when you incorporate in a coherent and well planned set of design principles to engage and guide your audience.
At the risk of annoying certain newspaper types, a quick look at a number of daily titles, particularly in the regional press, reveal a terrible mish-mash of fonts, weights and widths which serve only to confuse and degrade the content.
This is further highlighted when you see the generally cleaner presentation that you can receive on web based news sites.
Although not directly related when you take it in the context of the recent problems with the Tropicana make-over (see Advertising Age and a great point by point examination here Astuteo) it would indicate that some rethinking of how newspapers are put together, whilst not saving them, would potentially help them.
